As Autumn Ends and Winter Begins: A Season in Review

Hiya Community!

Now, you all know we believe in tradition and a proper close out before we move to the next! So of course, happy winter and all the lovely holidays and sweet restorative time that winter brings! But before we hop into what winter brings, we'd love to close out such an incredibly rich autumn session.

As a roadschooling, nature-based program, we were rolling around Atlanta exploring government systems and food justice, experiencing hands-on learning, and watching our students grow as critical thinkers and community builders.

Before we move on, we must thank the parents of GrassRoots Middle students. Foundational to our program is consistency - guardians willing to show up each time so there isn't "who's there?" uncertainty. Developmental psychologists find that consistent peer groups during middle school create psychological safety and intellectual courage, essential for the risk-taking required in deep learning. When students know their learning circle, they ask hard questions, share vulnerable thoughts, and engage authentically with challenging topics.

This Session Included: 

Government systems study (parliaments, presidents, and power distribution)

Civil Rights research at the library with an ice cream hangout

BeltLine art stroll exploring the Forward Warrior Mural Project

Maker space creations and expressions with a vegan butter toffee dip

Quarter project art show showcasing student work - each piece was upcycled and created from sustainable and eco-friendly practices. The point was not beauty, but of self-expression.

We can't say it enough - we're so grateful for the families who engaged in these conversations at home and the community members who opened doors for our learning. A special thank you to the parents who added so much to the space through photography, virtual and in person classes, trip planning, cooking, and attending the field trips and celebrations - the pour in was next level.

Welcome, Winter: 

So now, a sneak peek into the winter session. This winter, we'll be diving into water systems, food economics & leadership development. Registration details coming soon! But as always, because we are a traveling program (roaming from public to private spaces), we like to keep our class size below 12 students. This intimate structure allows us to keep costs accessible while ensuring each middle schooler has space for deep exploration and meaningful peer relationships.
